First Trip to Japan: Pre-Departure Checklist
Check your passport, visa, Visit Japan Web, accommodation, airport transfer, connectivity, and payments before departure.
Do this first
Check passport validity and whether your nationality and travel purpose require a visa
Enter your traveler, immigration, and customs details in Visit Japan Web, then save your sign-in method
List the status of your first accommodation, airport transfer, connectivity, and payment preparation
What you need
Passport and any required visa
Flight details plus accommodation name, address, and phone number
Cards and a plan for obtaining some cash
Phone, charger, and any required plug adapter
Steps
Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa page to select your passport country and travel purpose, then identify whether a visa and an application are required
Match flight and accommodation bookings to the name in your passport, then save your first accommodation address on your phone
Register traveler, immigration, and customs information in Visit Japan Web; Visit Japan Web does not replace a visa
Check the route, last service, and ticket method from your arrival airport to your accommodation, then save the address and route offline
Choose when your eSIM, SIM, or Wi-Fi starts and how it is received; also note where airport Wi-Fi is available if setup fails
Confirm that your cards work overseas and prepare some cash for cash-only situations or service disruption
Cautions
Visa exemptions and documents differ by nationality, passport, and travel purpose
Visit Japan Web registration does not guarantee entry
Check your airline's baggage, battery, and liquid rules for the exact flight
