How to Use Coin Laundry in Japan: Detergent, Drying and Payment

Use this guide to wash and dry everyday clothes yourself in a hotel laundry room or a local laundromat. First ask your accommodation about machines and access hours. Otherwise, search a map for ‘コインランドリー’ or ‘coin laundry’. Check the shop's official information and posted instructions for hours, machines and payment. Prices and controls are not uniform across Japan.

Check before paying — every load

• Read each garment's care label. Check machine washing and tumble drying separately.
• Check the machine and course: wash only or wash + dry? Also check capacity, detergent and accepted payment.
• Compare the finish time with closing time, checkout and your next journey. Leave room for extra drying and queues.

Machine and sign quick reference

From loading to packing

   Check an empty drum for forgotten items or dirt. If using a drum-cleaning cycle, do it before loading clothes; follow that machine's instructions for when to pay.

   Load within the chosen course's limit and close the door without trapping clothes. Washing and drying capacities may differ: follow the limit for your course.

   Recheck the course, machine number and price. Select, pay and start in the order shown. Some machines start automatically once paid.

   Check that the machine actually starts and read the remaining time. Note its number and finish time, and return promptly. Take valuables with you.

   After a wash-only cycle, move tumble-dryable items to a dryer and pay. Keep items marked ‘do not tumble dry’ out; ask your accommodation where you may air-dry them.

   Check the end display and that the door opens safely, then collect your clothes. Feel thicker areas for dampness and use the completion check below before packing.

If something goes wrong

Coins come back or payment fails

Check accepted coins and whether a course must be selected. If you cannot get change, ask staff or try another shop. If already charged or coins are jammed, stop paying repeatedly and use the posted support contact.

Paid but not running, or paid the wrong machine

Note the shop, machine number, amount and displayed message, then contact the posted support service. If you cannot call or communicate in Japanese, show the card below to hotel staff or another helper and ask for help contacting support. Refunds are the operator's decision.

Finish time passed but the door is locked

Do not force the door. At Baluko, ‘cd’ means cooling down. For other displays, read the machine's instructions; contact posted support for an error or stopped cycle.

Clothes are damp, or every machine is occupied

Only if tumble drying is allowed, reduce crowding and add drying according to the machine's instructions. Extension steps also depend on payment method. If time is short, ask your accommodation about air-drying space. For occupied machines, wait or find another shop; do not remove others' clothes without permission.

Before taking clothes back

• The selected course has ended. If it was wash only, check that drying is also dealt with.
• Seams and waistbands are dry. Let clothes cool before putting them in your bag.
• No socks or other items remain in the drum, around the door or on the folding surface.
