What to Book Before a Trip to Japan
Prioritize flights, accommodation, Shinkansen, popular attractions, dining, and luggage services by availability and official booking windows.
Do this first
Put travel dates, arrival airport, accommodation areas, transfer days, and must-do activities on one timeline
Mark each item as book now, wait for the official sale date, or decide in Japan
Add the official sale date, change and cancellation rules, and pickup method to the timeline
What you need
Travel dates and number and ages of travelers
Names exactly as shown in passports
A payment card accepted by the booking site
An email address that receives confirmations
One place to save reservation numbers
A calendar for change and cancellation deadlines
Steps
Once dates are fixed, compare cancellation terms and secure flights and the first accommodation; check availability early for busy seasons and small regional destinations
For fixed-date events, theme parks, seasonal transport, and popular attractions, find the official sale date and set a reminder for that date
For intercity travel, identify the JR company and route, then check the booking window on Smart EX or the relevant JR booking service; sale and seat-confirmation timing differs by product
For Shinkansen or limited express reserved seats, confirm train, party size, and luggage conditions, then save whether you board with a QR code, linked IC card, or paper ticket
For restaurants that require reservations or have limited seating, use the venue's official page to check the booking method, party size, seating options, and late-arrival policy
For museums and observation facilities, check whether timed entry is required and choose a slot that includes realistic transfer time
For airport delivery or luggage storage, check the cutoff, pickup point, hotel acceptance, and size limits, and book only the dates you need
Create one offline list containing every booking name, date and time, address, confirmation number, change or cancellation deadline, and contact method
Cautions
There is no single correct number of months in advance; always use the sale date on the official booking screen
Avoid resale tickets and booking agents whose terms cannot be verified
Match the booking name to the passport and check whether it can be changed before payment
Do not overfill the itinerary; leave time for airport, station, and attraction transfers and delays
